A fixed spool reel has a non-rotating spool where a rotating bail is lifted allowing the line to run freely off the spool during a cast. The bail arm automatically returns to its original position when retrieving the line. Drag adjusters can be front, centre or rear by a finger screw. Some fixed spool reels have a baitrunner or freerunner facility. This system allows the spool to run freely whilst fishing a static bait allowing a fish to take bait without feeling resistance. Larger fixed spool reels are preferred by newcomers to shore angling as they are easier to cast and usually cost less than a multiplier reel.
